+ OH MY GOD (BIS) +

    18 Bordeaux Values

New reviews of noteworthy Left and Right Bank reds from the inconsistent 2008 vintage

2008 is not a great vintage for Bordeaux, but despite the inconsistencies, there are some good values to be found. (For 21 more 2008 Bordeaux value wines, see the Feb. 18 Bordeaux Tasting Highlights.)

The vintage did favor the Right Bank, and two outstanding St.-Emilions, both owned by the Mestreguilhem family, lead this list of values. Both Pipeau and Pindefleurs are aged entirely in new oak, which shows in their tasty profiles; Pindefleurs is a smaller estate, with slightly younger vines (30 years old), with less of St.-Emilion’s famed limestone terroir than its sister property Pipeau (with 40-year-old vines).

Following them comes a host of sub-$25 bottlings from some of St.-Emilion’s satellite villages, including Puisseguin-St.-Emilion and Lussac-St.-Emilion.

The Left Bank was more variable in 2008, but value can be had as well: Château d’Arcins and Château Ferrande are both widely available names that offer very good quality in 2008, along with several others listed here.

It can be daunting to explore Bordeaux wines, because you do have to be careful when you step outside the well-known areas and château. But that also makes the search a bit more fun. Hopefully this list can point you in the right direction for some new discoveries.

    CHÂTEAU PINDEFLEURS St.-Emilion 2008 Score: 90 | $30

This has ample toast, with hefty coffee and bittersweet cocoa notes fronting for dark plum and roasted fig fruit. The toasty side dominates the broad, muscular finish for now. But the core is there, so cellar. Best from 2012 through 2015. 4,000 cases made. —J.M.

    CHÂTEAU PIPEAU St.-Emilion 2008 Score: 90 | $38

Offers lots of dark coffee, bittersweet cocoa and roasted fig aromas and flavors laid over muscular tannins. The smoky, broad finish rumbles along. Best from 2012 through 2015. 8,000 cases made. —J.M.

    CHÂTEAU SOLEIL Lussac-St.-Emilion Croix du Rival 2008 Score: 89 | $22

Shows whiffs of chestnut and tobacco, backed by fig paste and mulled black currant fruit, with a nice fleshy finish. This has solid guts for the vintage. Drink now through 2013. 6,000 cases made. —J.M.

CHÂTEAU LES ARROMANS Bordeaux Cuvée Prestige 2008 Score: 88 | $12

Ripe and fleshy, with a solid core of crushed plum and fig fruit nicely framed by sweet tobacco-tinged toast. A modern style, but not at all overdone. Merlot. Drink now. —J.M.

    CHÂTEAU BARREYRES Haut-Médoc 2008 Score: 88 | $22

Ripe, with nice flesh to the red cherry and red currant notes, backed by tobacco and melted red licorice. Solid. Drink now through 2012. 6,000 cases imported. —J.M.

    CHÂTEAU MAYNE-VIEIL Merlot Fronsac Cuvée Aliénor 2008 Score: 88 | $16

This solid red offers a core of plum and red currant fruit nicely layered with tobacco, iron and floral notes, with a focused, pure finish. Drink now through 2012. 200 cases imported. —J.M.

    CHÂTEAU SOLEIL Puisseguin-St.-Emilion Promesse 2008 Score: 88 | $18

A ripe, flattering style, with forward linzer torte and crushed boysenberry fruit backed by sweet spice and toast on the open-knit finish. Drink now. 2,500 cases made. —J.M.

    CHÂTEAU TOUR PRIGNAC Médoc 2008 Score: 88 | $19

Firm and focused, with a cherry pit note framing the core of damson plum and black currant fruit. Sweet spice and licorice notes fill in on the finish. Drink now through 2012. 4,200 cases imported. —J.M.

    CHÂTEAU D'ARCINS Haut-Médoc 2008 Score: 87 | $22

Red currant fruit, cherry pit, stone and savory herb notes run through this medium-weight, focused red. Drink now. 6,000 cases imported. —J.M.

    CHÂTEAU D'ESCOT Médoc 2008 Score: 87 | $15

This has a very pretty, plump core of mulled plum and currant fruit, framed with licorice, tobacco and spice bread notes that all linger through the stylish finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2012. 150 cases imported. —J.M.

    CHÂTEAU FERRANDE Graves 2008 Score: 87 | $25

This has nice smoky tobacco, lilac and crushed plum aromas and flavors, with a streak of tar adding length to the finish. Drink now through 2012. 1,500 cases imported. —J.M.

CHÂTEAU GROMEL BEL AIR Bordeaux Supérieur 2009 Score: 87 | $13

This has a good direct core of black currant and dark tobacco, with a loamy hint hanging on the finish. Drink now. 1,250 cases imported. —J.M.
